ABSENCE & PRESENCE

In the ‘Absence and Presence’ series, the artworks share experiences of being human - the basic need to connect, to attach and to be loved. Kim first paints abstract forms in layers exploring shapes, amoebas, cellular building blocks of connection, and universal energy or life force. The shapes painted in oils take days to dry. Each layer has to be dry before the next stage of the artwork can be further developed. It is a dance of meditation between the abstract that in time becomes physically realized and complete.

Absence and Presence deal with the complexity of relationships, psychology, spirituality, love, sex, and intimacy. Primal nature, human behavior, and creation are also explored. The works are deeply layered and question: what is the future of intimacy and relationships with ourselves and others?

The amoeba shapes reflect the parts that fit, the parts that don’t, and the energetic dance of parts before contact. The negative space is as important as the positive space reflecting: what is present and what is not; absence and presence; what is said and what is unsaid; and how one arrives and departs. Asymmetry is explored through the tension created by the shapes - subconscious and conscious. The bodies that are overlaid on top of these abstract compositions reflect memories - the present, past, and future all being one journey.
